Liberty Academy, formerly known as Archbishop Sentamu Academy, implemented a phone-free policy last November. Students now arrive at school, securely locking their phones away in personal pouches. These pouches, only unlockable by magnets outside the school gates, have become a game-changer.

Executive Principal Chris Mulqueen couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. "It's made a phenomenal difference," he asserts. The school environment has transformed, with students socializing more and the overall atmosphere becoming more predictable. Mulqueen believes it provides a safe space for students to simply be children, free from the distractions and pressures of the online world.

The students themselves are vocal about the benefits. Freyja, 13, finds the pouches "very beneficial," noting that phone usage during school hours has decreased significantly. This shift has not only improved classroom dynamics but has also enhanced the educational experience. Liberty Academy's journey is notable. In 2022, the school was rated "inadequate" by Ofsted. However, since then, pupil behavior and the curriculum have shown significant improvement. Mulqueen emphasizes the importance of appropriate technology use. "It's about the appropriate technology for the appropriate time," he says. The school encourages phone use outside of school hours but believes teaching students when and where it's not appropriate is crucial for their development. The Heartwood Learning Trust, which runs Liberty Academy and five other schools in York and North Yorkshire, has embraced this policy. Each pouch costs £15, and with approximately 1,400 students, it's a significant investment. However, Mulqueen believes it's a small price to pay for a calm and peaceful learning environment that enhances students' thought processes.
